Jan. 30 "Zilker Botanical Dinosaur Garden, 1"

oil on canvas, 10" x 10".
painted on site at Zilker Botanical Garden, dinosaur garden.

I was really excited about making this painting. This is my favorite spot in Austin and I have long dreamed of making a series around it. So this is my first step. Plus...it was my first time 'plein air' oil painting in public. Which is kind of a big deal for me. I have made watercolors there but not oil paintings.
Making this painting also made me think a lot about fears that I have had about plein air painting (a fairly marginalized form of art making, and often for good reason)and all the 'dreams' and romantic notions that I conjure when I think about doing it myself.
For the most part working on this project has at least brought back a sense of excitement and an experiential connection to my work that I feel has been missing. And regardless of the outcome of the paintings I am really happy about that.
I could go on about where I would like these paintings to go, how I wish they would look this way or that way, but I am trying my best to just let them be what they are.

Jan. 27 "Fur Wrap"

8" x 10", oil on canvas.

I am obviously working on a theme again this week. This time it seems to be wraps, or shawls. I bought the first two shawls a couple of months ago at a really cool vintage store. I had been waiting to possibly use them as costume props for models but when I was in my studio on Monday I suddenly felt like painting the shawl. And I liked it so much I painted the other one. And I like that one so much I thought I would keep going but I didn't have any time to get back to that vintage store and I was out of cool patterned shawls, so...I remembered my Aunt Laura's fur wrap.
I was given this when my Aunt Laura died and have never worn it. Where would I? So I thought it might be a good subject. There seems to be a 'natural' element to all of them. One has flowers on it, the other is made of leather and this one, fur. And the more I thought about it the more I was excited to paint it. But, in the end I really didn't have enough time. PLUS! I really cropped it and didn't want to do that. But when it was smaller it was looking like there was too much space on the bottom. Needless to say, I needed more of a square canvas for this one. All of the are a bit crowded but this one is so crowded it really abstracts the subject matter.
Which is funny in one way, as it looks like a hairy turkey on a platter....but....I would have rather it looked like an uncropped hairy turkey on a platter.

Jan. 22 "Happy Birthday Steve Perry!"

oil on board, 5" x 7"

Big break between Steve and Dolly. School started and I just didn't have the time or energy. Hopefully that won't keep happening.

Jan. 19 "Happy Birthday Dolly!"

oil on canvas, 8" x 10".

Since I did the MLK painting I thought I might keep the birthday series up this week. Last night I did a watercolor of Kevin Costner from Dances with Wolves that I will post. I would have liked to make an oil painting but I ran out of time and had to make that real late at night. Anyway, today is Dolly's Bday!

Painting a Day: Jan. 4, "Rainy Day"

A unicorn pinata that Caroline got for Vincent. Randy hung it from the tree outside our house. And it is raining, and dripping blue dye.

So I decided to make a New Years resolution. To make one oil painting a day for 2011. (small painting) I have already broken it. On Jan. 1st family was here visiting and I just didn't have the time. So...I made a weird marker drawing that I really didn't even finish. A lion and an Arby's worker. (I used to work at Arby's so I thought, what the hell!) And then yesterday was Caroline's last day so I ended up making a watercolor of the loft that she stayed at while she was in Austin. So I am posting both of these along with the last drawing I made of 2010.

I just added a page on my website dedicated to these sharpee drawings I have been making this year. They started out as challenges to myself to make super quick drawings from the loads of photos I have around and then seemed to get more and more detailed. They are each 6 x 6 so no matter what they can be made fairly quickly since I don't have too much studio time these days.

Happy New Year!
