McDowell Moutain Preserve Pastel Drawings

I love pastels!!  You can cover the paper so fast!  These are a couple of drawings I did out at the McDowell Mountain Preserve.  They were both made super quick on newsprint.  Pastels are definitely really limited.  I need to get a few more.

2 20 minute poses and a gesture

I went to open studio today super excited to use my pastels.  These poses were the longest, both 20 minutes.  I really enjoy departing from realistic color.
Here is also a gesture i really liked from the same figure session:

pastels, last day

These were my last two in the workshop,  I was VERY limited in colors, so I kind of had to keep using blue, brown and reddish brown for my darks which I felt was somewhat monotonous.  I was super happy with the top drawing.  And I happily learned a lot about how to use pastels.

masked lapwing

"Masked Lapwing," oil on canvas, 24"x 30", 2015.

A painting I made for a a show at some ASU building in downtown Phoenix.  The shows theme is "Bugs, Birds, Beasts and Blooms" and I wanted to make something that reflected my most recent work at the Phoenix Zoo.  This is a portrait of one of the birds at the aviary there.  There are two masked lapwings in the aviary and they are pretty hilarious to watch.  They always seem to have a worried look on their face.  This painting is almost done but not quite yet, I need to work up that worried look a bit, and there are some unfinished areas that I have to work out.
